TIPS TO BE PRODUCTIVE WHEN WORKING FROM HOME DURING COVID-19

  1. ESTABLISH YOUR SPACE

A dedicated space to work is a key (and often overlooked) aspect of working from home. By setting aside an area that’s your “professional zone,” you’ll instinctively slip into “work mode” whenever you sit down. Make sure this area is clean and organized. Make sure , you are not sleeping in the same room, where you are working , that zzz vibe does not leave the place.

  2. Plan Ahead (As much as you can)

During a crisis, it’s easy to fall into the trap of excessive short-term thinking. Schedule some time with yourself to plot out your next week, month, and quarter. What’s coming up? While nobody knows just how long this COVID-19 situation will last, doing as much long-term planning as you can will only benefit you.

  3. Check In Constantly

When in doubt, go with over-communication: update your boss frequently on everything you’re doing, and whether your schedule and deliverables are changing in any way. At the same time, also make sure that you’re communicating with your teammates frequently. When everyone’s working remotely, it’s very easy to end up trapped in a “bubble’ of your own making, so keep the chatter going on Slack, Teams, or the messaging platform of your choice. (Bonus: Chatting with people can also help relieve feelings of isolation.)

  4. Proactively Manage Your Calendar

Instead of leaving your calendar as a blank open slate for others to populate, set your time up to support getting work done. Every Friday, spend time plotting chunks of focused time in advance for you to meet the demands of the projects or responsibilities you’re managing for the next two weeks. Treat the time as a locked meeting the same way you would if you were meeting others. Don’t tag it as tentative. You can always change the meeting if priorities are pushing for that time but you want to stick to holding it for focused work as much as possible.

  5. Lead With Compassion

If you’re a manager, it’s easy to get obsessed on whether people are taking advantage of this time at home or actually working. As mentioned earlier, these are strange and stressful times. Now is the time to extend compassion, assumption of good intent and a culture of support. “Your employees are your best asset—whether they’re coming to work every day, working remotely, or unable to do their jobs,” says Miri Rodriguez, author of, “Brand Storytelling.” “Companies need to create a trusted space to acknowledge how team members may be feeling anxious or down during these times.”
